Kid with a Rash – Hmm…

Well I haven't posted in a bit: I have been writing though, so maybe I'll get one or two of them up soon.  Been busy with post-holiday catch-up and the client's been keeping me on my toes.  Oh ya - and the little carrier gave me the bird flu to boot.  Bennie and I have also been doing the busy work on footheory.com.  More news on that to come.

So, back to the subject: I woke up this morning and was really excited about the two new pair of slacks I picked up from the "slacks store" yesterday.  So excited that I sat in my "get ready in the morning chair" and was about to try on the first pair before even shaving. Gawd what a frign bore!  The excitement was evaporated though when the wife came in the room with a sort of puzzled/serious look…

"Will you take a look at Matthew's skin?" - she asked.

Well, as you could imagine this didn't sit well.  So I took a look and, sure enough, there were tiny little pinkish spots over his torso and on his forehead.  Looks kind of like - I won't say it so maybe it won't be.  Now, he's definitely hot blooded, just like his daddy, so it could just be a heat rash and it was a bit warm in the house last night.  He's also been under the weather lately and has missed a whole week of pre-pre-school (and friends). Puzzling though: he hasn't had much contact with other kids in about two weeks, well, except at the doctor's office - Argh.  Mommy has an important meeting today so I volunteered to take him to the doctor.

The boss just left, we're sitting here watching Curious George on PBS and I'm waiting for my shorts in the wash – won't be wearing my new slacks. Funny, I absolutely refuse to wear slacks, even pants, unless it's 40 degrees if I'm not at work. The appointment's set for 11:15a – so we'll have fun in the meantime and if he's only got a heat rash I intend to take him to his Gym class too. That'll be really cool – I hear that other daddies have gone and a video of the class had me laughing at the "swarm soccer"-like Gym experience (two-three year olds are a hoot).

Well, I need to get a snack going for the little guy.

Later in the day after the doctor visit

We just got back and he's taking a nap.  Turns out he doesn't have the Chicken Pox (I wonder if I'm spelling that right?).  It sure looks just like the early stages though and it's gotten worse through the day.  Turns out that the really bad cold that he’s had with a cough was a virus (ok - it was like the bird flu).  This virus after prolonged fever sometimes causes this “viral rash” the doctor calls it.  Nothing to take she says – it’ll just run its course in a few days.  She mentioned that he is in really good spirits, really active and needs no special care as he's been over the fever and sniffles for three or four days.  No school for another couple of days he's not contagious but to not expose infants.  We'll just keep him away from others in general - I'm sure you'd all appreciate that.  I asked the doc if I could take him to the park for a walk to get him out.  She said absolutely - he's a bundle of energy and exercise is not bad at all.

The park was a lot of fun.  The neighborhood where we live is like a little Disneyland (well, that's being a bit over the top but...).  There are all kinds of parks including one massive one with playgrounds, a train, lakes and waterfalls, sports fields, even a water park, though closed for the winter.  We took his dog and had a good walk.  Little Matt loved pitching pebbles into the big waterfalls.  Ok - by now I've decided I'll be taking the rest of the day off, well, with the exception of the conference calls I have scheduled for later in the day.  It's not really hooky - right?  What better excuse could there be?  So when mommy called and said she was on her way I suggested lunch together.  It felt kind of like a family date.

Wow - all-in-all it's turned out to be a really nice day with the polka dotted little guy.  And - oh ya, I got to wear shorts all day ;-).
